Restland’s Veterans Cross

Spent some time today at Restland Memorial Park. While walking around, I noticed this monolith with a prayer laid out in the shape of a cross. I was quite taken by the line “help us to be alert always to recognize the evidences of selfishness and greed in men and in nations which inevitably lead to conflict.”

Here is the prayer that makes up the cross:

Almighty god father of all mankind, hear this our prayer that all who receive thy supreme gift of life on this beautiful spinning Earth shall see the futility and tragedy of war, help us to be alert always to recognize the evidences of selfishness and greed in men and in nations which inevitably lead to conflict, fill our hearts with love of thee and of our fellow men and grant us the wisdom and courage to guide our world into a lasting peace, with freedom, dignity, and justice for all. Amen.

The Lt. Jack Miller Memorial Plaque & World War II Memorial

The Lt. Jack Miller memorial was dedicated in the Spring of 1999 to honor the 134 SMU students who died during World War II. The plaza surrounding it was a gift to the University from Henry S. Miller Jr. (‘34) and Carmen Miller Michael (‘45) in memory of their brother, Lt. Jack Miller, a 1941 graduate of SMU who was killed in action at Guadalcanal in 1942.

The George W. Bush Presidential Center at SMU

The Northeast face of the new George W. Bush Presidential Center at Southern Methodist University in Dallas, Texas. The building houses the Bush Presidential Library and Museum and the Bush Institute. The LEED Platinum certified building was designed by Robert A.M. Stern Architects while the landscaping was created by Michael Van Valkenburgh Associates with native Texas landscaping.

Pyramid Gallery’s “The Box of Souls” Music Box

This Hellraiser-esque intricately designed music box was my favorite item at this weekend’s Texas Frightmare Weekend. I was taken by the quality of these little boxes, but when the woman behind the table took one and started move her finger around the little circular disc, I was about to be blown away. The disc made a satisfying clicking sound and then when she lifted her finger up, music started emanating out of the small little box. Genius. Don’t worry, Cenobites not included.

While talking with the designer, he mentioned that they were just licensed to use the Christopher Young composed theme. Those boxes should be out around Christmas. Cannot wait.
